Ásynjur
Snotra
A prudent, gentle goddess whose name, Snorri says, gives the word snotr for a wise and moderate person; nothing else is known of her.
Snotra is the thirteenth goddess in Snorri's list of the Ásynjur. He says she is "prudent and of gentle bearing", and that a moderate man or woman is called snotr after her Gylfaginning 35.
As with Vör and Syn, the relation is almost certainly the other way round. Snotr, "wise, sensible", was an ordinary adjective. A goddess called Snotra is that adjective made into a person.
That sentence in Gylfaginning is everything the sources tell us. Snorri never mentions her again: she is missing from both of his lists of the goddesses who attended Ægir's feasts Skáldskaparmál 1 Skáldskaparmál 33, which name only the better-known Ásynjur. Snotra has no story, no family and no hall, and the Eddic poems never name her.
